What will this cost our company or the client (up front and long term)?

Cost can vary greatly from one company to another.

$80 and up

Around $80 seems to be the starting price from a num
ber of sites.
If you have a particularly large site or extreme needs you might
have to research sites designed for your business which could hike
the price dramatically.
Here are a couple of theme sites.

Does the CMS have contributors adding extensions and modules that make life
easier on the end user? Provide examples of add

Yes
. With both Wordpress and Joom
la there ar
e a number of plugins and extensions
one could choose from.
Each also has a number of active participants in community
forums where one could get assistance. While this part is free, each and every
install and hosting scenario will most likely

be different and will take time to resolve

What kind of platform requirements does the CMS need?

What is the specific focus of the CMS?

Is it for online stores? General site design?

What are limitat
ions a developer might run into with this CMS? Does it support PHP?
Javascript? Etc?

o

As a developer you will need to understand the programing. The official
Joomla programming book is almost
600 pages. On top of that there are
books on
templates, PHP, MySQL, commerce, etc. Developers for both
CMS will have to ensure they stay on top of all the new changes and
adapt as they roll out. For Joomla javascript can become unwieldy.

Are there any

major sites that use this particular CMS?

If so, identify them.

Yes

Joomla is used by IHOP, MTV

o

Wordpress is used by

If someone were to use this product, how long before he/she could expect to be “up
and running?”

Are resources/tutorials available for t
he end user or developer?

o

A few of the frameworks for Joomla and Wordpress are Yoo Theme,
Rocket Theme and Studio Press. For developers these are tools that can
be used to easily create individual themes
or templates for your website.
For the end user,

Deliverable:

Based on

your research, make a cross
-
reference chart to compare the
products. This would be a summary of your research, not the details.

Provide resource
links. Upload into Moodle.

Make this research
meaningful:

Decide on a CMS and start developing it
--

you will need it for Project 5.

Great resource on comparisons is a website called
sitepoint
.

Themes
start around $80 from a number of sites if you do not want to use one of the
free ones. If you have a particularly large site or extreme needs you might have to
research sites designed for your business which could hike the price dramatically.
Hosting co
sts will vary depending on traffic volume but start at $5 and can get into the
hundreds. Security can be free with plugin or add
-
ons but some sites offer security with
support in case you become an attack victim. Paid security with support will start at
around $100 per month and can get into the thousands with multiple sites. With both
Wordpress and Joomla there are a number of plugins and extensions one could choose
from. Each also has a number of active participants in community forums where one
could

get assistance. While this part is free, each and every install and hosting scenario
will most likely be different and will take time to resolve issues.
The best place to find
assistance in a free forum will be the Wordpress and Joomla sites. They have

many
thousands of members and t
housands of topics to explore. If
one were to start a simple
site they could expect to pay in the first month around $200 for a simple site with
hosting and a paid security suit. After this the monthly costs would drop to
the
neighborhood of $100 per month to continue the same services. A large unknown cost
would be the amount of personal time put into the site development.
