Final Algebra II Project:
The Role of Math in the World
Purpose:
Students will create an encyclopedia of Algebra II. Each student will work on one part of the
encyclopedia individually and as a group (ac
ross
Algebra II classes).

examples of how the concepts are used in the professions that use Algebra II concepts?

During the month of this project you will have a total of 7 proje
ct work days in class. Your
only homework during the month will be related to the project.
I am expecting you to do about 30
minutes of work a school night on your project. You will get an invitation to be part of a google
document. This invitation wil
l be sent to you once you have sent me your definitions. More information
about how to use the google document will follow.

: You will be doing a presentation of your work including an artifact to
show what you have learned

The presentation will need to be between five and ten minutes. You will be randomly assigned a
presentation time closer to the May 6

required of those watching presentations and there will be an open note quiz a

presentations are complete (The date of this quiz is TBA, but it will likely be Friday the 10th).
If you choose to do your end of the year exhibi
tion on your final project your presentation will need to
be ready by Thursday the 2
nd
. If you choose to do your exhibition about another project we have done
this year, then you will need to create another 5 to 10 minute presentation of your exhibition.

Deadline Number 1: April 4

Look over the attached concept map.
Choose the top three concepts you would like to study
and learn more about.
Write them on a sheet of paper along with reasons for why you would
like to have the topic as your concept.
(I will not accept late choices. They are due by 4:15 pm on
Thursday.
Due
to the necessity of having equivalent groups
there is no exception to this
deadline.

On Thursday evening I will compile all the data and put people into topics, and you
will know what your project concept is on Friday the 5th. The better your reason
s are the more
likely you will get one of your top three choices.
Some good example sentences you could use for your reasons are as follows:

This is a graded part of your proj
ect so please spend
some time choosing your questions before you do your interview. Have something to write with
and on when you talk to
your interviewee. Guidelines: Have 10

have to ask them all). Don’t ask that many yes or no questions, you will get yes or no answers.
Plan on your interview taking between 10 and 30 minutes. Don’t ask to interview someone
and
expect them to do the interview right then and there. If you need an extension on this part of
the project because your interviewee can’t talk with you until the weekend, then you must ask
for an extension by e

mail explaining why you need an extensi
on. I must have the request for an
extension before the interview is due (i.e. I should have the e

mail in my inbox before your class
starts on Thursday). I will not give an extension later than Monday the 8

A revised definition of your topic.
All of the sources you have so far.
At least one profession listed that used the concept.
At least one example
of how the concept is used in a profession.
A paragraph about what skills are needed to learn and use the concept.
