Flange

yoke

is

component

which

is

used

in

propeller

shaft

for

the

transmission

of

power

in

the

automobiles
.


INTRODUCTION


Forgings

may

be

produced

in

either

open

or

close

dies
.


In

open

die

forging

is

also

known

as

flat

die

forging,

the

hot

metal

is

struck

or

pressed

between

two

flat

surfaces

or

simple

contoured

dies
.



In

closed

die

forging

process,

cavities

or

impressions

are

cut

in

the

die

block,

the

compressive

force

is

applied

to

the

entire

surface

and

the

metal

is

forced

to

take

its

final

shape

and

dimensions

as

it

flows

into

and

fills

the

die

cavities
.

the

impressions

are

of

simple

shape,

dies

are

sunk

on

vertical

milling

machines


The

intricate

shapes

are

machined

on

die

sinkers
.

they

EDM

machine

as

die

sinkers
.



The

EDM

machine

consists

of

electrode

and

work

piece
.


The

electrode

and

raw

material

are

immersed

in

a

dielectric

medium
.



Generally

kerosene

is

used

as

the

dielectric

medium
.


The

electrode

nothing

but

template
.



Templates

are

made

from

the

blue

print

or

model

of

the

part

to

be

forged
.



These

templates

are

then

used

for

laying

out

the

outline

of

the

impressions,

which

are

to

be

sunk

in

the

die

blocks
.



The

templates

are

usually

made

of

graphite
.


After

the

finishing

impression

has

been

completed
.


The

die

blocks

are

clamped

together

in

exact

alignment
.


A

lead

antimony

alloy

is

poured

in

the

finishing

impression

through

a

sprue
,

which

is

machined

into

each

die

block

from

its

outer

edge

and

extends

to

the

cavity

of

the

finishing

impression
.


For

sinking

an

intricate

impression

using

EDM

it

takes

around

5



10

hours



The

resulting

lead

cast

or

“proof”

is

now

carefully

checked

for

dimensional

accuracy

by

the

die

maker,

as

well

as

by

the

engineer
.

is inspected by the
Meta vision 108
machine.


The carbon is 0.366%


Manganese is 1.54 %


Silicon is 0.25%


Sulphur is 0.025%


Phosphorus 0.03%


Heat treatment process


Hardening is done to this yoke at a
temperature of 860
°
C . The yoke is held for a
two hours at that temperature.



After hardening the yoke is quenched in water.



After Quenching tempering is done to yoke at
a temperature of 570
°
C. It is held for an hour.
And it is cooled to open air.
