Vital importance of
Eucalyptus

tereticornis

in farm forestry and its wider adaptability prompted the
present study. The experiments on
Eucalyptus

tereticornis

comprised of evaluation of a set of twenty clones at
two sites viz. Bithmara in District Hisar (latitude 29°10

N, longitude 75°46

E and altitude 215.2 m above mean
sea level) and Seonthi in District Kurukshetra (latitude 29°59

N, longitude 76°50

E and altitude 258 m above
mea
n sea level) and two sets of clones at one of the sites viz. 18 clones at Bithmara in District Hisar and 7
clones at Seonthi in District Kurukshetra. All the experiments were established in randomized block design.
Micropropagation studies were undertaken
in the Department of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, CCS
Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar by selecting five diverse clones of
Eucalyptus tereticornis

to study the
growth response of different clones
in vitro
.

ents of variat ion and genotypic coefficients of variation
in all t he t hree clonal t esting experiment s clearly reflected t he presence of large amount of genet ic
variabilit y for clearbole height and unforked height, and reas onable amount of genet ic variabili
t y
for t ot al height and diamet er at breast height in all t he t hree clonal t est ing experiment s. Herit abilit y
es t imat es (in broad s ens e) reflect ed t he predominance of herit able variat ion for mos t of t he
charact ers under s t udy in all t he t hree clonal t est ing
experiment s. The es timat es of genet ic advance
as percentage of mean clearly s uggest ed t he pot ent ialit y of t he clonal mat erial for improvement of
clearbole height and unforked height in all t he t hree clonal t es t ing experiment s.

Clone no. 132 was found most

promising among twenty clones tested at Bithmara (Hisar) and Seonthi
(Kurukshetra) with high mean performance for total height, unforked height, MAI of total height, MAI of
diameter at breast height and MAI of unforked height in both the environments. Clo
ne no. 3 was found most
promising in clonal testing experiment of eighteen clones at Bithmara (Hisar) with highest mean performance
for total height, clearbole height, unforked height, MAI of total height, clearbole height and unforked height.
Clone no. 13
0 was found most promising in clonal testing experiment of seven clones at Seonthi (Kurukshetra)
with highest mean performance for diameter at breast height, CAI of total height, CAI of clearbole height, CAI
of unforked height and MAI of diameter at breast

height. Clone no. 7 was also found promising with highest
mean performance for clearbole height, unforked height and MAI of unforked height.

In micropropagation studies significant clonal differences were observed for survival of explants after
steriliza
tion, establishment response, multiplication of shoots and root initiation of regenerated shoots.
In vitro

growth performance of different clones was compared with growth performance under field conditions. Ranking
of clones under
in vitro

and field condit
ions was found almost in similar pattern. These results suggested the
feasibility of selection of superior clones in a short period of time through
in vitro

culture.
