Adding an X-ray target to the Rhodotron

beam line
allows treating much thicker products

You can for example sterilize medical devices on pallets or irradiate products having high
densities.

Wide Range of Scan Horn Sizes
Some products may require
wide scan horns.
IBA has implemented horns allowing scan
lengths up to 2.4 meters.
X-Y Widening of the Scan
This option allows spreading the beam over a wider surface of the horn window. For high
power Rhodotrons
®
, this reduces the current density on the window and gives a
better dosing
homogeneity.

Increased Reliability
The Rhodotron
®
’s new modular design gives the option to have redundant power amplifiers
reducing downtime
in the power chain to a minimum.

RHODOTRON®
Operating Principles
Every pass through the central pillar accelerates electrons by increments of 0.8 to 1.166 MeV. Once
electrons have finished the acceleration process, the beam is extracted from the cavity and scanned
in order to generate an “electron curtain” for product processing.

Electrons are fired by the heated filament of
the electron source located in the outer wall
of the cavity.
The electrons are introduced into the
cavity
when the electric field is such that it will
accelerate the electrons inwards, towards
the hollow coaxial cynlinder in the center.
The electrons pass through openings in
the inner cylinder while the electric field is
reversing.
On emerging from the inner cylinder,
the
electrons are further accelerated (towards
the outer cavity wall) under the influence of
the new reversed field.
Using beam deflections magnets, the
electrons are reintroduced into the main body
of the accelerator for additional crossings
of the cavity in order to reach the required
energy level and leave the cavity through a
beam line.

Boxes containing cartons of products (for example medical devices) are placed on the loading line,
irradiated in the E-beam chamber and then are directed to the unloading area within minutes.
