List of Terms


Protocol

A set of formal rules describing how to transmit data over shared
networks.

AppleTalk

A network protocol developed by Apple Computer, also called AFP or
the AppleTalk Filing Protocol.

TCP/IP

Ethernet de facto standard protocol for

internetworking.

IPX

A network layer protocol used with Netware servers.

HTTP

Protocol used on the World Wide Web.

Router

A device for isolating and forwarding traffic between networks.

Packet

Unit of data sent across a network.

Collision

When two de
vices transmit data at the same time.

Bandwidth

Capacity of a network to carry information using a particular type of
cable, as measured by the maximum number of bits per second that can
be transmitted.

Firewall

A network security feature used to protect

or suppress packets.

Hub

A device connects other devices to a network.

ISDN

A set of communications standards to deliver services over a single wire.

LocalTalk

A network protocol using Apple’s built in networking features to transmit

Netware

A proprietary network operating system designed for IBM compatibles
using primarily the IPX and TCP/IP protocols.

Topology

The physical layout of a network, including

cables and devices.

Transceiver

A device used as an interface between a workstation and the network to
which it is attached.

Backbone

A central network that connects a number of networks, usually of lower
capacity.

Checksum

A simple method used for det
ecting errors in transmission of data.

FTP

A protocol for transferring files over a network.

Network Interface
Controller (NIC)

A card (or set of chips) that fits inside a computer so that the computer
can connect to a network.
