A controversial issue that arises from genetic engineering comes
from, vivisection,

the use of
animals in experiments

especially if the subjects become distressed
. In 2008, perfectly healthy pigs
were genetically engineered to have cystic fibrosis so
that researchers at the University of Iowa and
Missouri could study the advance of the disease since it appeared to be the same in the pigs as in actual
humans.

Although, people are trying to find cures for diseases and make advances in science, they are
n
ot thinking about the rights of the animals they are using.

When studies are done on humans they
must consent to it; animals do not have this ability.
There are laws and organizations like the Animal
Welfare Act and PETA that set standards for the humane t
reatment of animals, but even though these
small barriers are
made, they are no
t enforced and
it is estimated anywhere from seventeen million to
one hundred million

animals

are used
in medical research projects each year.
