New API enables applications to provide performance tips to Easy Tier

Enables applications and middleware to direct data placement for application
-
based tiering

No changes to applications required

Advanced self
-
tuning reduces administration costs further and allows IT staff to
focus on higher
-
value storage initiatives

Clients can assign volumes on any drive tier within the Easy Tier pool

Predictable performance and cost with applications assigned to a specific tier

Provides additional flexibility for multi
-
tenancy environments and structured
service levels and billing.

Eliminates need to dedicate entire RAID rank to a volume that needs to be on a
particular tier, which is inefficient use of expensive drives

Enables clients to move data temporarily when needed (e.g., market opening,
month
-
end processing, business analytics)

Enabled through CLI only at this time

Data protection enhancements

z/OS volume initialization overwrite protection

ICKDSF is the main z/OS utility to manage volume (Initialize, Reformat, etc)

Volumes were sometimes overwritten when utility couldn’t tell if volume was online with another z/OS image

New DS
8870
“VERIFYOFFLINE” parameter for INIT and REFORMAT commands that will fail if volume is online
with other z/OS images

Client benefit

-

Prevents accidental overwriting of volumes

Important notes

Can be invoked by ICKDSF utility or data migration software, such as TDMF and FDRPAS

New Query Host Access command can provide connection (path group) information about every image
accessing a volume

Supports CKD and Fixed Block devices for z/Linux and z/VM

SCSI Reserve detection and removal function (open systems)

Many clients use FlashCopy targets to test (and perform) Disaster Recovery scenarios, which requires servers to
reserve LUNs

When these servers are shut down incorrectly, they left the LUN reserved and unavailable in subsequent DR tests
or a real DR procedure

This function detects whether a SCSI Reserve exists, what server has reserved the LUN and allows users to reset
the reserve when performing a FlashCopy Establish

Client benefit

Simplifies DR testing by providing an easy way to determine and eliminate “Reserved” LUNs

Important notes

Available though CLI

System z enhancements for high availability

Non
-
disruptive state save

New API and command for server to initiate a DS
8870
data dump on demand without requiring a warm start

Can be done automatically through GDPS

Can also be done manually through

GDPS panel option

DFSMS System Data Mover (XRC) Command Execution

F ANTAS
00
x,STATESAVE command

Client benefit

Captures important data dump information for diagnostics without taking applications offline and impacting I/O performance

HyperSwap “soft fence”

New feature to “fence” primary volumes after a HyperSwap operation, so they’re not accessed by other applications (LPARs) dur
ing

downtime

Client benefit

-

Prevents loss of data when other applications try to write to failed primary volumes before a successful failback

Important notes

Supports CKD and Fixed Block devices for z/Linux and z/VM

Requires all DS
8870
s to have this feature

Feature is reset automatically on primary volumes when failback occurs, but can also be done manually through ICKDSF, z/VM, C
LI
commands

Supports all HyperSwap volumes managed by GDPS and TPC
-
R

Timestamp synchronization between Global Mirror and System z Parallel Sysplex

DS
8870
will adopt Sysplex timestamp for all Global Mirror Consistency Groups

Up until this release, the Sysplex and Global Mirror timestamps were different

Client benefit

The time of the last consistency group can be correlated with other timestamped Sysplex events for improved recovery.

Important notes

GDPS will provide support in a subsequent release

Extending storage leadership for mainframes

IBM Power integration and enhancements

Power AIX

Integration of DS
8870
Metro Mirror and PowerHA SystemMirror HyperSwap

HyperSwap coordinates application failover across hosts and sites when DS
8000
fails

DS
8870
support added to DS
8800
/DS
8700
support announced November
2012

Client benefits:

Provides superior level of business continuity for planned and unplanned
outages

Designed for same ‘six nines’ availability offered by GDPS HyperSwap

Power i

Support for System i variable LUN sizes

Client benefits

More flexibility for volume sizes and can increase capacity utilization

Clients can specify LUN sizes in increments of
1
GB, up to
2000
GB
