NIU Visual Studio 2010

Purpose
:
A server
-
based

ASP.NET/VB.NET/C#.NET development, and web
publishing, environment for students of OMIS and CSCI programs.


Usage
: There are two ways to use this environ
ment

1.

Directly
: Use the shared environment (VS.NIU.EDU) to develop
websites
using

the Visual Studio IDE. Your websites will be
automatically available on the World Wide Web via the
VSWEB.NIU.EDU/<ZID>/<Website Name> address.

2.

Indirectly
:

Install a free co
py of
Visual Web Developer Express 2010

on your computer and use a secure FTP program, such as
File
zilla
, to
upload to
VSWEB.NIU.EDU
.

Directions
:


To use the environment directly

1.

IF YOU ARE OFF CAMPUS
: If you are off campus, connect to the NIU
VPN first
. If you’re on campus, including residence halls, skip to step
two.

to the NIU Network

Login with your Z ID and let the
Cisco
AnyConnect client install.

d.

After

you’ve done this once, you can run the Cisco AnyConnect
that i
nstalled on your system, each time you connect
afterwards.

This will establish a secure connection to the NIU network.

2.

Use a Remote Desktop Connection to connect to VS.NIU.EDU. Using a
Windows client, the quickest way to do this is go to START/RUN and
typ
e MSTSC. When the prompt appears, type in VS.NIU.EDU. Connect.

3.

Log in with your Z ID.

Make sure the domain is set to NIUNT.

4.

Microsoft
Visual Studio

Ultimate

will automatically launch.

5.

Visual Studio Ultimate offers several development opt
ions, to create
a
new website,
select
File/New Web Site…

6.

You can select ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Empty Web Site
dependin
g on your design.


7.

In the web location field type the following path in the web location
field. Replace the highlighted text with your ZID and your

website
name
. I suggest using the course name as a site name (e.g. OMIS475)

This must be done to ensure your website is visible on the WWW.
Always store
your websites directly under the

You’re now ready to develop a website! Note: The first time you
create a site it can take up to 10 minutes to be
published
on the
WWW.


Using secure FTP to connect to VSWEB.NIU.EDU


Purpose
: Enables the uploading of content to

your website outside of the
development environment.


Usage
: You might chose to develop your website using a free download of Visual
Web Developer Express 2010. You would then use FTP to publish your local
content to the web
-
server (VSWEB.NIU.EDU). It
’s also useful for adding content,
such an image, to your site.


Directions
:

1.


Install an SSL capable FTP utility, such as
Filezilla
.

Using Filezilla, create a New Site

Call the site VSWEB

4.

Enter
VSWEB.NIU.ED
U

in the HOST field

6.

Select
Require explicit FTP over TLS

7.

Select
Normal

for Logon Type. Enter your Z ID. Enter your password

8.

Select
Connect

9.

Accept the security certificate.

10.

Upload content.
