Abstract

Bayesian networks have received a significant amount of attention in

the past few decades from
both scientists and engineers, in fields as

diverse as artificial intelligence (AI), statistics, c
ognitive
science, and philosophy. Indeed, just in the field of AI, there has

been a major paradigm shift
towards using Bayesian networks and

probabilistic models more generally, in automated reasoning
systems,

which are now pervasive in real
-
world applicat
ions. In this talk, I

will provide an
overview of Bayesian networks, highlighting the key insights underlying them and some of the
main associated developments

in the last few decades. I will in particular highlight how Bayesian
networks and related tools
are being used today, in applications as

varied as automated diagnosis of
systems, information theory,

computational biology, and information retrieval.

Through these
examples, I hope to convey the influence that Bayesian networks have

had in numerous dom
ains,
and further illustrate how scientists and engineers can benefit from having Bayesian networks in
their toolbox.

I will also comment on the challenges lying ahead in this important

field of
development.
