COURSE OBJECTIVES

Construction of underground works has nowadays a

great

development at inter
national level in the domain
of
transportation, energy production and preservation
of environment
.
The Risk Analysis and Risk
Management is an issue of great relevance in order to
utilize

measured and unforeseen rock technical
properties in the design to
a
void accidents and to
control costs and times of construction
.


The
State Key Laboratory for GeoMechanics and
Deep Underground Engineering
of China University
of Mining & Technology
decided to organize a
Course in the domain of Analysis

and Risk
Manageme
nt in Underground Structures in Rock.

Case histories
and practical solutions
at world level
are presented.

Prof. Sousa has 40 years of engineering experience.
He has extensive international experience (15
countries) on a range of projects.

is an expertise in
the domains of Dams

Foundations, Slo

Numerical Mode

ling, Rock Mechanics Tests,
Underground Constructions (Hydroelectric Schemes,
Storage, Mining, Tunnels, Metros), Risk Analysis and
Assessment, Mo
delling T
echniques, and Monitoring.

Prof. Sousa is multilingual, speaking English, Spanish
,
French and Portuguese; he has authored or co
-
authored over 20 books and hundreds of journal
articles, presentations and
technical
reports.


He is
very active in a number of professional societies and
has served as President of the Portuguese
Geotechnical

Society and Vice
-
President at Large for
the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM)
from 2003 to 2007. He was also the Chairman of the
2007 ISRM Congress in Lisbon, Portugal
,

and he is

now Consultant of the Laboratory for GeoMechanics
