GREEN AEROSPACE
INDUSTRY, TECHNOLOGY &
INNOVATION
MISSION TO ITALY

APULIA & PIEDMONT REGIONS

18

22
March 2013

PROGRAM
ME

ITALY’s aerospace and defence industry is the 6th largest in the world and the 4th largest i
n Europe
with a turnover of C$20 billion and a workforce of 60,000. Characterised by industrial and scientific
centres of excellence in the North and South, Italy is home to the Finmeccanica Group and many
highly specialised SMEs that are leaders in the pr
oduction of helicopters, commercial and military
aircraft, regional jets, unmanned aircraft, aircraft turbines, structures, landing gear, radars, sensors
and defence electronics. Aerospace represents one of the most important sectors for trade and
research

cooperation between Canada and Italy and there is a significant window of opportunity for
Canadian players wishing to partner with Italy on major international programmes and on European
research programmes
-

Horizon 2020.

APULIA AEROSPACE
employs 5,000

and generates a turnover in excess of C$1.5 billion. A value
-
added supplier on international aircraft programmes, including the Bombardier C
-
Series, the cluster
retains niche capabilities in state
-
of
-
the
-
art advanced materials and in the processing and as
sembly
of complex aircraft structures and parts. It is this technology and know
-
how that determined Boeing's
choice to develop and produce Dreamliner B787 fuselage sections and horizontal stabilisers at
Alenia Aermacchi's plant in this region. Thanks to ge
nerous investments in this sector by the regional
government, Apulia offers significant opportunities for Canada in terms of supply, research and
technology partnerships in the private and public sector.

PIEDMONT AEROSPACE
is home to major players Alenia
Aermacchi, AVIO, Thales Alenia Space,
Selex Galileo and United Technology Corporation and generates a turnover of C$3.5 billion and
employs 12,500. Key suppliers on Boeing (777, 767, 787), Airbus (321, 340, 380), AgustaWestland,
regional jet (ATR, Superjet

SJ100, Bombardier C
-
Series), military aircraft (Eurofighter, Joint Strike
Fighter, C27J) and UAV programmes, its global supply chain is impressive. Supported by strong
academic and research structures, the industry offers a wide spectrum of technological
and
manufacturing know
-
how.
