Detailed description:





Context.


With the increased cost of energy and
the sharp growth of demand, the need of energy
-
aware
solutions has appeared as an imperative for governments, companies and individuals. This thematic
is particularly relevant for the networking community since power consumption related to ICT is
estimated

to be between 2% and 10% of the global power consumption. Hence a very important
objective is the reduction of the energy consumption to operate and manage the existing networks,
especially with the development of demanding new applications.




Network de
sign solutions with low power consumption have been proposed for Backbone (optical)
networks in [1]. The main idea was to turn off some links of the network while ensuring the routing
of the demands. The paper presents an integer linear modeling of the pro
blem, some theoretical
bounds for specific topologies, and study the impact of such solutions on network fault tolerance
and route lengths. This work is done with ANR DIMAGREEN [2]




Objective.



The main objective of this internship is to extend the pro
position mentioned in [1] in order to
include WAN Optimization techniques. WAN optimization consists in accelerating a broad range of
applications accessed by eliminating redundant transmissions, performing caching, traffic shaping,
compressing and priorit
izing data, TCP Acceleration, QoS management, etc... Usually, the Wan
Optimization Controllers (WOC) are placed at the edge of the LAN in order to accelerate the
traffic. The paper [1] published in Sigcomm 2000 describes "a protocol

Eliminating Redundant Network Traffic". It evaluates a data compression technique, the amount of
redundancy depending on the type of network traffic, and therefore the expected gains in term of
redundancy elimination.




Some of the following questions
might be adressed:




Propose a complete state
-
of
-
the art on the proposed techniques by WAN optimization. Each
technique of acceleration will be described and for each technique the expected gains in
terms of delay, throughput, QoS, power consumption...




Per
form experimentations to evaluate the power consumption of the WAN Optimization
Controllers (WOCs) depending on which technique is being used.




Propose a new modeling of the problem taking into account WAN Optimization and design
new algorithms to find ef
ficient solutions.




Given a network topology and a set of demands, which links to activate if WAN Optimization
is used, or how to route the demands to achieve the same goal?




Where to place the WOCs in the network in order to minimize the global network po
wer
consumption?
