Genetically Modified Foods

Date:

Monday, April 18th
, 2011

Genetically Modified foods are foods that

have been genetically manipulated.

I

am

talking about them to educate people on the

b
enefits and risks
.
Genetic Engineering

is the manipulation of genes in certain organisms
.
Genes
are taken out of one organism

and placed into another. There are genetically modified foods that are good for

human

health
, and they may also have some environmental benefits
. However,
some

Genetic
ally Modified foods can cause cancer
in people.

The process of genetic

engineering may also cause damage to the environment
I am against genetically

modified foods.

As mentioned in the previous paragraphs, there are some health benefits to

genetically modified foods. According to the Agricultural Biotechnology Council in the

U.K.,
Apples that help to prevent cavities,

de
-
caffeinated

coffee
,

and vegetable oil that

is low in trans
-
fat are all examples of foods that are genetically modified foods
.

According to the Agricultural Biotechnology Council, t
here are also

many

environmental benefits of genetically modified foods, including minimal
tillage, which

thereby
decreases the emission of greenhouse gases and reduces soil erosion.

As mentioned,
Genetically Modified Foods
can
cause stomach and colon cancer.

According to
Dr.
Stanley Ewen from Aberdeen, United Kingdom,
genetically modified

foods often contain the

cauliflower mosaic virus as
a “promoter”,

but that means that

the virus could be

infectious and could become a “growth factor” in the stomach and

colon, encouraging

the development of tumours.

T
he faster and larger

tumours grow,

the higher the chance of them becoming
malignant.
There are also
environmental

concerns that
genetically modified

herbicide tolerant plants allow farmers to apply

“wide spectrum”
herbicides
to their

field, which kill all other plants.

Th
is could

eventually wipe out other species of plants and further reduce biodiversity.
Finally, if

only two or three GM species of major crops are grown, a disease could wipe out a

significant amount of them.

I believe that myself

and others have the right to know if their food has been
genetically modified.
People, including me,
shouldn’t have to eat food that they don’t
know is
potentially
dangerous
.

The only way a person can make an informed choice is if
they know what they’re
eating. As I previously mentioned, certain Genetically Modified
foods can cause stomach and colon cancer.
My parents said that they are concerned
with eating genetically modified food because they don’t trust anything that’s not
naturally

grown
.

I am
concerned with eating genetically manipulated foods because I
don’t trust genetic manipulation.
