This link helps me because it tells me about the whole idea of genetic

This link helps me with my project becaus
e it explains all the advantages
of genetic engineering. It shows some stories about real life farmers and
how it has helped them come out of poverty. Whether they are a family
working farm in India or a business farm in Spain or the US. They explain
they depend on these new technologies and they mention how it has
improved their quality of life, their income has increased and the value of
their crops have increased too. These benefits are important to many
farmers as it is the main reason why they hav
e adopted the technique. It
has been accepted for one reason by these farmers, this reason is
because they deliver what is need to the family. Even though they have
to pay an amount of money at first to buy the technology, they end up
with crops that incre
ase their income that they can afford to buy luxury
items instead of just living on the edge of what they need to survive. With
this technology poverty can be helped and can be resolved, but what they
don’t mention is the disadvantages that this method bri
ngs, whether its
health conditions and risks or even just too much money for the poorest
farmers to buy. Because it is said that this method of farming is too
expensive for some people and the only people who could receive such
luxury were the richer peopl
e in Spain or the US.

This book helps me understand both sides of the story of
engineering and what it is all about, and the process of it all.

It tells me
about the highs and lows of it and how it has affected, harmed and cured
people in the past and how it is suppose to help people in the future. It
explains in detail what
genetic engineering actually is, and mentions the
arguments for and against this process. Some scientists are for this idea
of GM food, plants, animals and even humans. They think that the
technology in the future will advance rapidly and that any mistakes

will be overcome and that there is no need to worry. They try to make us
believe that GM people, animals and food, will over take in the near
future the world. They think that they will be able to control everything
that is starting a new life on eart
h and will be able to modify it. While
other scientists think that it is a bad idea as several people and animals
have suffered from gene therapy treatments. They say that they have
gone too far and that they think they should stop this as soon as they can

and maybe, only use it for urgent needs, but not to have control of how
things and people turn out. The scientist usually think this way on a basis
of religion and they think that God should have the power to create us
and to make us as he wants, and not
let scientists take that control. So it

A Genetically Modified World

Once upon a time there was a litt
le girl called Milena Johnson. She lived
with her mother, Valerie, and her father, Pryce in New Zealand. Milena
was only thirteen years old when she had asked her parents about where
and how she was born. And this was her story.

My parents had told me tha
t I was born in Wellington, New Zealand in
2002. The date now is March 2015. They had said to me that I was
genetically modified, which meant that my parents deliberately changed
my characteristics by manipulating my genetic material so I could be just

way they wanted me to be. Perfect. I asked them why they had made
that decision instead of just letting me turn out the way I originally would
be, they had said that ‘it was the new thing, to genetically modify
everything.’ And so that’s the way they live

their lives and the way I live
my life now. I have no siblings or close relatives that I can interact with.
Other than my parents I have a pet dog called Leroy. They also asked the
vet if he could genetically modify the new pup as well. My parents are
te strict about what we eat and where we buy it. They say that we are
not to buy organic foods, that I am not allowed to eat any organic
products, they also mention to me that they are living this lifestyle to ‘live
in the future’. I'm not really fond of m
y parents and we hardly talk
besides me telling them how my school day was. We’re not so close as we
used to be when I was younger as my parents and I have different points
of view on how we live our lives and if its healthy or not. I’ve been eating
cally modified products since I was 4 years old. Since then my mum
has forced me to eat everything she wants me to eat, even though if I
don’t like it. My parents don’t want me to eat anything from school, as
they only sell organic products.

Personally, I

hate the fact that the only thing we eat includes chemicals
and nothing is organic. My parents love this way of living but I hate it. I
also dislike that I was genetically modified. Maybe most of my friends at
school say that I'm one of the prettiest girl
s around, but they don’t know
the truth. I feel that I was genetically modified so I can be the perfect
child, with brown curly hair, green eyes and an olive tanned skin. I would
liked to have known what I would have looked like if I wasn’t genetically

At school the other day, my friends and I were walking towards science
class and as we took our seats our teacher had told us that our subject
for the next few weeks was going to be on genetic engineering. My
friends were exited as they had heard a
bout it and thought it was pretty
cool. On the other hand I was nervous, as I knew all about it and I lived a
life according to everything that it refers to. The first class was on
ricultural genetic engineering. At the beginning of class Mr. Folland, ou
science teacher, said

that in 1953 scientists discovered some basic
workings of DNA and they hoped that they would be able to, create food
to feed the country, increase agriculture, cleanse environmental toxins,
create cures for diseases and create more
efficient animals. Scientists
thought that they could improve agriculture so that they could help create
more food to stop world hunger.

needs and stand on their own without having to rely on a

Mr. Folland started the subject by elaborating about the imprecise
technology being used which meant that the technology is not so efficient
because farmers who ca
n only afford one type of machinery are limited to
what they can do,


if the machine breaks down they will not be able to
harvest their crops and will lose a great deal of money on repair and not
having sold anything to the market.

Mr. Folland
talked about the widespread of failure and how it can
threaten our entire food supply. He said that
the nutritional value of foods
can be decreased if we add to or remove from the original DNA.

Also, with
introductions of GMO’s into the environment we are
risking gene
pollution, which cannot be reversed. Synthetic organisms can reproduc
with original organisms and can create a whole new species. The last
cause of agricultural genetic engineering would be that mutation can
cause new toxins and allergens whi
ch people may be exposed to.

For the health hazards we learnt that there was no long
term safety
testing, the nutritional value would be decreased, there may be allergic
reactions and toxins whereas people could get sick and there are side
effects which ma
y kill some people

over a long
period of time

and the
problems are very hard to trace back.

As for the environmental hazards on this topic there would be an
increased amount of herbicides used, there would be more pesticides, the
gene pollution would not
be able to be cleaned up and the ecology may
be damaged.

One week had passed after that science class and we were back in the
same laboratory again except this class we were learning about
genetic engineering.

We had learnt that it was about modifyi
ng and
altering a DNA sequence of an organism to choose which characteristics
and qualities that the parent wants for their child. This is what my parents
had done to me.

Mr. Folland had informed us that the scientists hoped
that they could find cures for
genetic and common diseases.

about how, one day, I would live a life that would be all organic

my parents would agree with me and we would be able to change our
lives around, that was my goal for the future. That second the bell rang
and I snapped out of my dreaming mode and packed my things to go.

The class after the weekend, Mr. Folland
told us about the disadvantages

where we each got on a computer and researched the statistics of how
many people died or were permanently scarred by this treatment. After I
had finished my research I had found out that in the year of 2008, 37
people had died, 150
0 were partially paralyzed and 5000 people were
temporarily disabled by a syndrome which related to a genetically
modified bacteria.

By the time we got back to class we discussed our
results and the bell rang to indicate the end of class.

t Mr.
Folland said that we were going to have a test on this topic

next class

we had finished the unit on genetic engineering.

Science class was the last class of the day, so I packed my things and
headed home. I usually liked walking home as school buses would usually
be full and it would
take me quite a while to get district

as my house was
probably the farthest out of all. I li
ved on a street at the top of Wellington
where most of our neighbours, well almost all of our neighbours, thought
the same thing about

our lifestyle
. In my area our neighbours agreed with
my parents about

living a life of the genetically engineered

or as t
hey like
to call it the future. E
xcept what made my family different from the rest
was that I was the only child in the area that was genetically modified.

Which made it harder for me to make friends
around where I live

as none
of the kids here went to my
school and they were the only ones that new
how I was really born.

Next science class Mr. Folland
had put out the test papers before we got
into class. We all took our seats and waiting for his approval to start the
test. I just wanted to get it over with

and start a new unit where I don’t
have to learn about something I truly despise. I closed my eyes and took
a deep breath and then opened my eyes again. At that moment Mr.
Folland said we could turn our papers over and start the test. I turned my
test pap
er over and read the first question.

The first half of the test was on agricultural genetic engineering and the
second half of the test


on human genetic engineering.

I found the
test quite quick and easy to get through, although there w
as one question

I had to think about for a couple of minutes before I could answer. What
made it a lot easier was that it was a multiple choice test.
The one
question I couldn’t answer was ‘What diseases were caused by abnormal
genes or chromosomes?’ the choices were: a)

nausea, b)
, c)
sleepiness or d) lack of concentration. As I was about to circle my answer
the secretary from the main office barged into our classroom and we all
looked up from our papers to see her horrified faced as she searched the
room. She
went over to the teacher and showed him a piece of paper with
a note on it. Mr. Folland then stood up and announced that I, Milena
Johnson had to go with her father who was waiting outside the reception
for an emergency. I told him I had not finished my te
st and Mr. Folland
said that I could have the remainder of the time to finish my test next
class. So I packed my things and left to go meet my father.

As soon as my dad saw me he got up and started walking towards the
door, so I followed him. We got in th
e car and he started driving away
from the school parking lot. I had asked him where we were going and
the only thing he could say was that my mother was in the emergency
room in the hospital. The ride to the hospital was quiet as none of us
spoke and as w
e turned off the main road and into the hospital parking
lot I saw a tear run down my father’s face and thought that this wasn’t
going to be good. We parked and got out of the car and went into the
hospital up to the emergency room waiting area, and waited

for my
mother’s doctor.

The doctor came half an hour later and spoke to my father first and my
dad looked devastated and I could see that he was crying now. After what
looked like the doctor apologizing to my father he went back into the ER.
My father wa
lked over to me trying to wipe away his tears and stop his
sobbing, but he noticed I knew there was something wrong.

My father had told me that my mother had just

died from an allergy
which was still unknown, as my mother had never had an allergy to
ing before. But my father said that the doctor told him it was an
allergy from the genetically modified food that she ate

all the time. I was
silent for the whole trip home except from sniffing every now and again
and trying to stop th
e tears running down
my cheeks.

My father stayed home for a couple of days then went back to work, and
as for me, I skipped two weeks of school and just stayed home in my
room all day. My father was still in a grieving mode and he wouldn’t cook
clean or help out around the ho
use, so I did all the work. At that moment
I had talked to my father and told him that we were going to change our
lives around and stop eating genetically modified products, that we were
going to eat organic food, and that we are going to live a healthy l
My father had agreed with the thought of my mother dying from this
lifestyle they thought would help them live in the future.

After those two weeks I went back to school and teachers and students
have heard about my mother and came to say their
condolences. The last
lesson of the day was of course science, and I had to finish my test. Mr.
Folland kept me in 15 minutes after school and I just had that one
question to answer
, ‘
What diseases were caused by
abnormal genes or
chromosomes?’ I circled b
) allergies, and I was confident of my answer as
that is what my mother had died of. Later that week I had found out that
I got full marks on my test, and passed that class. And my father was

science class and I have achieved my goal.

my father thinks that
genetic engineering should not be used on agriculture or humans as they
have high disadvantages and risks, even though the advantages may
seem great. Think twice about your decision on Genetic Engineering, and
rethink your options ab
out life. Genetic Engineering will not solve your
problems in the long
term process.
