Literacy

Phonics
:
Our study of short ‘a’, short ‘o’, and short ‘i’ has allowed us the time to
learn important routines that will carry on throughout our phonics lessons for the
year. You can reinforce our phonics
experiences by helping your child to notice
words which have our studied target sounds as you are reading or speaking
together. Pull out old refrigerator magnet letters
-

they’re still fun. Play
“hangman” or spell words in shaving cream on the bathroom ti
le…WHATEVER! Once
we’ve learned a word family in school, it is appropriate and necessary to expect
your child to read and write its members correctly
-

from now on!

Contractions
: We have been speaking briefly about contractions from our
Harcourt Reading S
eries. This is a VERY tricky concept, so any reinforcement at
home is helpful! We have discussed/will be discussing the following:

It is

it’s

he is

Literature Focus:

This week we are s
tudying plants, and so will be reading
Pumpkin, Pumpkin

by Jeanne Titherington. We will also be reading stories (fiction
and non
-
fiction) in our reading books which contain our

all word family. Lastly,
this week, we will continue

our focus on color words!

Read
-
Aloud:

We have been enjoying our chapter book,
Bunnicula
. This humorous
tale written by Deborah and James Howe captured our interest
immediately
. It is
a suspenseful (but age
-
appropriate) mystery. We explored some “backgr
ound
knowledge” about vampires so that we could appreciate the cat’s theory that the
family’s bunny is…a vampire! This story is FUN!

Handwriting
: Using our program, “Handwriting Without Tears”, we have been
busy reviewing making uppercase letters and usi
ng the proper pincer (three
-
finger)
grip low near the point. We will begin lowercase letters next week!

Science & Social Studies

Open Circle:

Please refer to the periodic Open Circle Updates for current
topics that we are discussing in class
. Recently,

we have discussed Non
-
verbal
signals (such as our bathroom signal, the quiet coyote, and silent applause). We
have also discussed what good listening is (at which Room One are experts at!!).
This week, we will be talking about including others.

Science
:

This week, the story
Pumpkin, Pumpkin

by Jeanne Titherington to enrich
our study of plants!

This is a delightful story with a repetitive, patterned text that
shows stages of a seed growing into a wonderful pumpkin! This connects perfectly
to our study of

living things and the growth of plants.

Math
: We had our Topic 2 Test today. Nice job boys & girls!! Thank you for all
your assistance with the enVision math homework. Keep up all the hard work as we
move into Topic 3 (
Five and Ten Relationships
)!

Special Notes
:

Halloween
: For Halloween, kindergarten and first grade communities DO dress
up in costume and have a little parade around the school. This always makes for a
VERY fun experience. We then have story and a treat!

Please look for a flyer com
ing home with more information!

Book Fair:

The book fair runs all week! We browse on
Tuesday

afternoon, and
we
purchase on Wednesday, October 23

during our regular library time!

We
encourage the children to browse, but emphasize that they are not to as
sume or
demand your family will be purchasing books. This is a strictly optional fund
-
raiser.
They will bring home a “wish list” to make your purchasing easier, if and only if, you
choose to do so.

Special Link Poster Project:

This past week, we enjoyed a beautiful poster
project from Alex Perl. Very creative, Alex! Room One’s hallway now features
Alexandra Sutton, and Alex Perl. This
Thursday
, we are looking forward to a
project from
Maddy Nylen!

Estimation Jar:

This

Tuesday
,
we are looking forward to an estimation jar
from
Phoebe Chase
! Next Tuesday, October 29, we are looking forward to the jar
from Noah Coughlin!
