Indexing new forms in communication.

Comprehensive coverage of all
scholarly information

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation

How to create a new concept?

Use Thomson Scientific’s powerful technology and popular interface

Powerful functions and intuitive
-

ISI Web of Knowledge

Cited reference search tools found in the Web of Science

Integration with existing resources

Partner with experts

NEC Laboratories America, the creator of software used for the
autonomous citation indexing (e.g. CiteSeer)

Collaboration with 7 institutional partners, academic institutions that host
repositories

Build a pilot product and solicit feedback from users and repository
administrators to refine the final version

Feedback from our partners

“…there are more or less separate worlds of communication at the
moment…the journals covered by the traditional databases, and
then this whole world which is free on the Internet somewhere. By
pulling these two together and trying to integrate, at least on the
level of cross citations, it helps to bring these two together.”

“the key issue is turning now on the willingness of faculty to
automatically put stuff into their repository”

“what would be ideal is…some way that you can go to your
people’s page or whatever it turns out to be and see each of your
documents and what the citation impact has been”

How do we select the repositories

Why select sources at all?

The question of authority and trust is increasingly a problem with material
found on the open web

Who wrote this work? And what is their affiliation?

Did they follow sound scientific principals?

What were their sources?

Who has reviewed this to make sure it is accurate and correct?

These problems are not addresses by Web Search engines

Researchers and Librarians simply do not have time to check every
source to make sure it is authoritative and trustworthy

Selection guidelines have been developed by Thomson Scientific using
a combination of expert knowledge and decades of experience in
evaluating journals and academic web sites (Current Web Contents,
since 1998).

How do we select the repositories

Authority

Who is the sponsoring body?

Universities (MIT, ANU, Dartmouth)

Government, NGO, intergovernmental (NASA, United Nations, EU)

Research institutes, Societies etc. (Max Planck Society)

Corporate research (Hewlett
-
Packard, Sun Micro etc)

Design and maintenance of site

No broken links, Ability to access full text

Frequency of updates

Review of the repositories policies and procedures

Is there any moderation

Technical standards and stability etc.

Accessibility and format of full text

Compliance to standards, OAI Metadata standards

The result

A uniform, consistent citation index to all types of content (pre
-
prints,
archived articles, technical reports, dissertations)

Links and

citation data
at article level as an incentive for
every
researcher

to post work in an institutional repository

Enables citation navigation within IRs and between IRs and
Web of
Science
.

Incorporates quality editorial process.

Is multidisciplinary in scope, encompassing same disciplinary structure
as the
Web of Science

wherever possible.

All the power and functionality you would expect from an
ISI Web of
Knowledge

resource

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation

Full Text and
repository are
searchable fields

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation

Same functionality as the
Web of Science. For example,
sort by “Times Cited” to
identify influential works

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation

Although the Full
-
text is searchable
the
Full Record

displays
bibliographic data and abstract

Clicking the “
View Full
Text
” button will link to
the item in the repository

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation

Use citation navigation to
expand the search:

Cited References

Times Cited

Related Records

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation

Associated records link an item to
a related work by the same author,
for example a completed paper and
the initial draft of the same work

Results Analysis is
also possible

Challenges

IRs contain immense variety of document types and formats

They are evolving in scope, content, and goals

Huge interest in the Academic/Library Community

Web Citation Index Goals for 2006

Grow to encompass majority of IRs
(over 500 identified)

Provide ability to view activity within repositories and across repositories

Complement Web of Science with additional citation relationships

Create environment for experiment and understanding of new content

How Complete Can it (Possibly!) Be?

Web Citation Index Value

Enhances the value of the repository at the university

As we index these sites they are ALL cross
-
seachable and linked to the
Web of Science (2,700 customers)

For the publishing researcher of an IR paper we provide a dynamic
Times Cited, WCI Full Record and equivalent Web of Science record

Building Services on the basis of Open Content

WCI Provides another layer of added value for those institutions who
access it.

WCI provides a new route for Web of Knowledge users to find these new
types of materials

Web Citation Index enables greater discovery of its value

By not storing or caching the full text of each repository there is no
confusion for the researcher
