GTL Program Goals


Achieve a predictive understanding of microbial function through
systems biology to enable progress toward biotechnology solutions for
DOE missions.


Specifically:


Understand the genes, proteins and protein machines that perform a cell’s
functions


Understand the regulatory networks that control complex cellular
processes


Understand how diverse microbial species interact in communities to
respond to and alter their environments


Use this understanding to:


Develop bio
-
based fuels as a major secure energy source


Develop biological solutions for DOE’s environmental remediation
problems


Explain how microbial systems influence the global carbon cycle
