Scanning policy for food commodities and for the pure and applied
sciences related to foods.

“From farm to fork” is the standard phrase used to describe the boundaries of
article inclusion in the commodity sections of FSTA. However, our remit is as
broad as “to cover all papers of relevance to the food industry”.

Pre
-
farm gate/pre
-
harvest material is also sourced when it has an impact on
quality of the final food. We don’t pick up any articles where the emphasis is
on product/food yield.

Some articles in the pure and applied sciences sections of FSTA do not mention
foods directly, but will contain supporting information in the areas of
biotechnology, genetics, chemistry, physics, microbiology, etc.

Indexing

FSTA subject index

allows easier identification of appropriate records.

Major concepts are identified using selected controlled terms (SUBJECT HEADINGS) sourced
from the FSTA Thesaurus.

Indexes are balanced, using the most specific, appropriate keywords. Long lists of terms are
avoided
-

general term used instead.

Includes document type, country names and additional Food Safety terms
-

aids record filtering.

FSTA Thesaurus

An alphabetical keyword list used in FSTA indexes. Hierarchies displayed for all terms.

The latest edition (Ed. 9) contains 10,571 terms, including over 350 new terms

Use to: identify descriptors, expand or explode searches , identify RT and synonyms, check
history

IFIS scientists scan a wide range of material, but only food science

relevant information is included. This clearly distinguishes FSTA from

other products with a cover
-
to
-
cover policy.

FSTA is renowned for its quality, which is ensured by a team of in
-

house

scientists who apply key words against IFIS subject
taxonomy.

The quality of records in FSTA is only of the highest
standard.

IFIS’ Thesaurus enables a highly structured search.

IFIS scientists monitor content sources in 29 languages. Relevant

content is summarised into an English abstract. This greatly benefits

dissemination of content that otherwise remains undiscoverable to the

wider food science community.
