KUSATSU PROFILE

Geographical Feature

Kusatsu is a situated in northwest Gunma Prefecture.
It is a small town, extending 9 km from east to west
and 8 km from north to south. Among the 2,000
meter Mikuni Mountains to the northwe
st of Kusatsu
lies Mt. Shirane, with a volcanic crater at the summit
reminiscent of a moonscape. The peak of Mt.
Shirane is also the site of the caldera lake known as
Yugama, or "hot water crater", the home of the most
acidic water found on the planet. Thi
s is a landscape
of breathtaking geographic variety, ranging from
vibrant, deep green forest around the mountain to
the desolation and spewing volcanic gas of the
Sesshogawara thermal field.

The dense thickets of rhododendron found
throughout the Kusatsu

region have been
designated a national natural treasure by the
government of Japan. To the southeast of Kusatsu there is an expanse of highlands rising
1,200 meters above sea level. Volcanic eruptions in the distant past sent lava flows deep
into this are
a, eventually forming approximately 100 volcanic hollows of all sizes. Today hot
springs water bubbles through all of them.

Climate of Kusatsu

The township of Kusatsu rests on a highland plateau, 1,200 m above sea level. Average
daily temperature is 7 de
grees Celsius, and at the height of summer, the temperature does
not rise above 25 degrees very often. In general, however, summer weather is cool and
temperate, giving rise to the moniker "Tyrol of Japan" which is sometimes used to describe
Kusatsu. The c
lean, fresh air and natural abundance of the environment help make the town
a year
-
round tourist destination.

During the CCSR workshop, mountain will begin to turn red in order to prepare for coming
winter. You may see number of mountains covered with tin
ted autumn leaves on the way to
Kusatsu and at the city.
Specially Mt. Shirane which is the active volcano (2,160m) is very
famous as beautiful shape and the rich environment.

Some person call such mountain as ‘burning mountain’.

And the period is also ri
ch of
clean

air and you can see great mountains

Ho
t Spring (Onsen in Japanese) in Kusatsu

Kusatsu Onsen is ver
y famous and popular as traditional tourist place in Japan.

Sulfur
-
rich
gases emanating from the earth infuse the hot springs of Kusatsu with sulfuric acid. With a
PH ranging from 1.7 to 2.1
, a few seconds is all it takes to destroy bacteria and harmful
m
icrobes.

The hot water in a temperature range of 25
-

96 degrees C gushes out of more
than 100 fountainheads in various sizes. To maintain the beneficial effects of this natural
Onsen water, it is coo
led naturally, never diluted.

The extremely acid hot sp
ring water in Kusatsu is said to ease
neuralgia
,
alleviate muscle
pain

and the
symptoms of chronic skin disease
, and
relieve chronic fatigue
. From time
immemorial the Onsen water has also been renowned for helping
maintain beautiful skin
. In
addition to it
s other health and beauty benefits, the hot springs energize the

body's
metabolism
. To maximize the effects and the pleasure of the experience, bathers acclimate
their bodies to the hot water by first pouring it over themselves before easing into the bat
h.

-

Yubatake, the Main Onsen Source

At the heart of Kusatsu lies its main hot spring source, Yubatake
-

the "field of hot water."
Gushing some 4,500 liters per minute, Yubatake boasts the highest output of natural thermal
spring
water anywhere in Japan. H
ere the constantly overflowing, scalding water is naturally
cooled through a chain of seven traditional wooden buckets before being sent on t
o the
bathtubs
.

Restaurants, pubs and souvenir shops line the area around Yubatake. They are
always abuzz with bust
ling crowds of people enjoying Kusatsu life.

-

Yumomi

Performance

Yumomi is a traditional methods of cooling down hot spring water to bathing
temperature

by
strring the water with large wooden paddles.
T
he process is accompanied by the singing of
a local folk song. The Yumomi performance
for tourist is held daily in the
Netsunoyu building
just next to the Yubatake. You can buy
a
ticket to join Yumomi performance and sing the
song at the same place.
