ON THE UVM LANE SERIES

"
They play with clarity, perfect togetherness, and the finest of tuning…

crystalline textures and smooth attack

London

The UVM Lane Series is pleased to announce a performance by the internationally
-
recognized Pacifica
Quartet on Friday, November 9, at 7:30pm in the UVM Recital Hall. A pre
-
performance talk will be
held in the hall at 6
:30pm and is open to the publ
ic
.

Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often
-
daring repertory choices, the
Pacifica Quartet
over the past two decades
has gained international stature as one of the finest chamber
ensembles performing today. The ensemble has
carved a niche for itself as the preeminent interpreter of
string quartet cycles, harnessing the group’s singular focus and incredible stamin
a to portray each
composer’s
evolution, often over the course of just a few days. Having given highly acclaimed
per
formances of the complete Carter cycle, the Mendelssohn cycle, and the Beethoven cycle, the Quartet
presented the monumental Shostakovich cycle in Chicago and New York during the 2010
-
2011 season
and in Montreal and at London’s Wigmore Hall in the 2011
-
201
2 season. The Quartet has been widely
praised for these cycles, with critics calling the concerts “brilliant,” “astonishing,” “gripping,” and
“breathtaking.”

The members of the Pacifica Quartet serve as quartet
-
in
-
residence at the Jacobs School of Music at

Indiana University. Prior to their appointment, the Quartet was on the faculty of the University of
Illinois at Champaign
-
Urbana from 2003 to 2012. The Pacifica Quartet members also serve as resident
performing artists at the University of Chicago. Among
many other awards and recognitions, the Quartet
received the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance and was named
Musical
America's

2009 Ensemble of the Year.

For its Lane Series performance, the Pacifica Quartet will perfo
r
m the Quartet in B
-
flat Major, Op. 76,
No. 4, "Sunrise," by Franz Joseph Haydn, Quartet No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich, and Quartet in A
minor, Op. 132, by Ludwig van Beethoven. The concert is generously sponsored by Valerie Gump and
by Vermont Public Radio.

Tickets are $30 f
or adults and $15 for students.
