Mechanics of Solids and Structures
Learning objectives
To introduce and gain practical insight into the mechanics of materials solids and structures and its
implementation in engineering design. To understand the importance of mechanics and dynamics in the
selection of materials structures to the success of engineering design projects.
Who should attend?
The course is designed for technical and non-technical staff working in design and development, quality
control, loss prevention, process engineering and engineering improvement roles. It is also designed for those
who function as managers, supervisors, engineers, planners, inspectors, designers, researchers, investors or
procurers, and who seek a basic understanding of the practical aspects of engineering materials.
Pre- requisites
This is an introductory engineering module. However some knowledge in the concepts of the mechanical
engineering discipline s is a distinct advantage.
Course content
What are engineering Mechanics?
Mechanical properties of materials
Simple Stress and Strain
Shearing force and bending moment
Torsion and deflection of beams
Dynamics and vibration of engineering structures
Thermodynamics and heat transfer properties of materials
Failure analysis
Mechanics of composite materials
The course overview
This course defines the principals of engineering mechanics and introduces the relevant British and
international standards on their implementation. The course continues with an introduction and work on stress,
strain, shear force and bending moments of engineering materials. This is followed by a presentation on
torsion and deflection of beams, vital components of engineering mechanics. Practical examples of dynamical
forces and vibration mechanics is also reviewed. This is followed by a theoretical examination of heat transfer
and other thermodynamic properties of materials. The course concludes with discussion on failure analysis
methods and also a look at the mechanics of composite materials.
The course duration and hours
As a standard course this is delivered over four weeks duration and 30 teaching and contact hours per week. It
is expected that trainees, in their own time, spend between 6 and 10 hours each on two assignments. They are
also expected to seek tutorial help of about 4 hours.
