I.

TITLE

USE OF WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICES THAT MAY CAUSE
ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) TO CRITICAL CARE MEDICAL
EQUIPMENT

II.

POLICY

IT IS THE POLICY OF
H
OSPITAL
/
SYSTEM NAME

TO MANAGE THE USE OF
WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICES.

“Wireless commu
nication devices” include all devices that emit radio waves, including
cell phones, “cellular”, “digital” and “PCS” technologies, walkie
-
talkies, radio remote
controls, and other wireless communications devices (wireless PDAs, two
-
way pagers),
etc.

Wirel
ess communication devices may cause interference with electronic medical
equipment. For the safety of our patients,
H
OSPITAL
/

will manage the
use of wireless communication devices in critical patient care areas.

EXCEPTIONS

Guidelines for the us
e of wireless communications devices shall not apply to
Public Safety, Security or Fire Safety personnel, the city Fire Department, EMS or
emergency services personnel, or to any police or law enforcement agents while
responding to an emergency call.

III.

PURPOSE

improved electromagnetic compatibility of wireless communication devices with
electronic critical care medical equipment.

ical equipment and verify authorized use
of wireless communications devices. Call Information Services at

Recommended Common Sense Rules for Usage

Inform

visitors and/or family members to limit the use of wireless communication
devices to unrestricted areas. These are typically lobbies, halls, cafeteria and waiting
areas.

Baylor employees should restrict the use of wireless technology to devices tested
and

approved to be electromagnetically compatible with medical equipment by
Biomedical Engineering
. For a list of approved equipment call
(xxx) xxx
-
xxxx
.

Monitor your wireless communication device when in critical patient care areas, and
if you are not able t
o remove or turn off your wireless communication device in these
areas, please make every effort to maintain at least a three foot distance from any
electronic medical equipment in use on a patient. For employees using approved
devices, please try to avoid

letting the device come into the immediate proximity of a
medical electronic device in use on a patient. Two
-
way radio equipment (pagers,
walkie
-
talkies, wireless PDAs) has a higher power and greater potential of
interference. A device that is set “not to

answer” is still actively communicating and
emitting radio waves, potentially causing interference with medical equipment.

Enforcement

To control the use of wireless communication devices in critical patient care areas, the
following steps shall apply:

1.

Verify that proper signage is posted in the area.

2.

The staff and/or management shall reiterate the area restriction and encourage
physician/employee/patient/family/visitor compliance with this policy.
