La

Serena

has

become

a

very

important

town

in

Chile
,

because

of

it
´
s

economic

development

and

relevant

urban

growth
.

During

the

last

10

years

La

Serena

has

experimented

a

large

and

quick

urban

expansion
.




The

environmental

consequences

of

the

spatial

expansion

of

the

urban

area

in

flood

risk

prone

areas

hasn
´
t

been

consider

in

urban

planning,

nor

has

natural

risks

associated

with

human

interventions

in

the

environment,

therefore,

the

probabilities

of

facing

a

risk

event

in

the

area

increases

every

year
.




Considering

the

increment

on

drought

risk,

the

accumulation

of

soil

material

in

watersheds

and

slopes

can

influence

the

magnitude

of

a

flood

event

in

the

area
.

Therefore

there

is

an

imperative

need

of

implementing

land

planning

and

risk

management

in

this

district
.
