asked about LinkedIn. And, the most common question we get is...."so I signed up on LinkedIn, but I don't know what
I'm supposed to do with

. Does it have any value?"

Let's consider the numbers. LinkedIn ha

more than 20 million users. The average age o
f a LinkedIn user is 41
years old, with $110k in
income. Every Fortune 500 company is listed/rep
resented on LinkedIn. 500,000 S
s are LinkedIn users. Over 150 industries are
included. And the list goes on.

The answer to "does it have value" is YES. Thoug
h as with most things in sales and marketing that have value, it requires more than just
"signing up." You have to put some up front effort into it and then you have to keep working it. But when you do, you can use

it in the
following valuable ways:


You can locate and introduce yourself to contacts in the accounts you are targeting. Communicating through
LinkedIn makes you 30 times more likely to get a response than through a direct email or phone call. Also, you can learn a lo
about your pro
spect by reading their profile (what they're currently working on, their employment history, who they recommend
and who recommends them, where they went to school, their personal interests, etc.)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Having a COMPLETE profile

on LinkedIn will drastically improve your SEO results. You can
include up to three URLs in your profile that are indexed by Google and other search engines, as well as create your own Link
URL that is searchable. There's more about how to best optimiz

Job Search/Recruiting and Reference Checks.

If you are searching for a job or hiring a sales and marketing position, LinkedIn
can help. Not only can you search for positions and candidates on LinkedIn, you can ver
ify job experience and contact other
contacts within LinkedIn who were at the company during the same time for references. As the one searching for the job, you c

Thought Leadership.

LinkedIn has a Q&
A section where members can ask questions about several pertinent topics. This is a
great place to get some of your most pressing questions answered. AND, if you are trying to establish yourself or your compan
y as
thought leaders, this is the place for you

to post answers to others who have posted questions. When doing so, you are allowed to
include URLs and links to support your answer, helping you to both promote your site and improve your SEO.

LinkedIn can be a very powerful business networking tool

that no sales or marketing person should be without. LinkedIn does have
several membership levels, ranging from free to $500/yr, so evaluate the one that makes the most sense for you and go for it.

PROFILE: The main thing you must remember when

creating you

is that it must be

Join LinkedIn and complete the overview

Make sure you include all the emails you use (personal and professional) as
this is how other LinkedIn users you know will find

Be as complete and accurate as possible. This is how colleagues and friends
will search and find you…and how potential business partners will evaluate
you in their search for customers and vendors.

Select an industry and add your specialties

Reflect your
key word phrases (better for SEO)

Add your website(s)

Choose the “OTHER” setting so that you can name the links (better for SEO)

Create Public Profile URL

Use your company name in the LinkedIn public URL you set for your profile.

We recommend you set your profile to complete view and show all sections
you have completed (especially websites for SEO purposes).

Set your
Contact Settings

This is where you determine your contact settings (introduction only or
introductions and emails), about what subjects you are most interested, and
how you want to be contacted (some rules of engagement).

Upload your Contacts from your email client

LinkedIn has a great tool for uploading the contacts you have stored in your
email client already and matching them with other LinkedIn users who have
already set profiles. You can also add your contacts manually

Make introductions to connect via LinkedIn

Use the built in tool to invite your contacts you’ve uploaded to accept a
“connection” via LinkedIn. We find the best way to do this is to include as
personal a message as possible! This may take a little
more time, but it is
well worth it, as it improves the response of those who accept your
connections, as well as improves the quality of the connection itself.

You should also do a search on the LinkedIn site for those users who were
employed by your past
employers during the same time you were. These are
connections you can make and rekindle via a LinkedIn invitation.

This is an ongoing task that needs to be redone every month or so.

Collect at least 3 recommendations from

your “network”

Once your
contacts have accepted your invitation, request a recommendation
from them. You need at least 3 to “complete your profile,” but the more the
merrier. Try to ensure you have a few for your current company and at least
one recommendation for each past positi

Give and you shall receive!

Remember, networking is largely a give/get process and LinkedIn is

exception. When someone gives you a recommendation, return the favor!
Also, be proactive…give the recommendation to some of your connections
before they ask.

Be somewhat selective about

direct connections

you make
. While you do want to make as

many connections as possible, those
connections are really only valuable to you if you know something about each other. If you accept connections from LinkedIn u
sers you
know nothing about and you don’t make an effort to first determine the “value” of the

Regularly monitor the Q&A section for
questions you are uniquely able to answer

Thought Leadership is one of
your greatest sales and marketing tools.
LinkedIn users have the ability to ask the network questions they are facing
that by your answering you present yourself as an expert in that field. Be
sure to truly answer the question, not just promote yourself,
but always use
the link feature to link back to your site (helps with SEO). If your answer is
chosen as the best answer this will elevate you in LinkedIn searches as well.

Ask questions that can help you do your job.

Use this same tool to poise question

in your
job…This can be a great way to validate
assumptions and get expert
advice for no cost!


Identify networking groups within LinkedIn

LinkedIn offers a platform for networking grou
ps of like interests to connect.
Some of the networking associations you already belong to may already be
on LinkedIn. You can search the directory within LinkedIn to see what groups
may be for you. Also, as you review the profile of your connections, take

of the LinkedIn groups they belong to and evaluate if you should join to!

Set a Calendar item to “work” your LinkedIn

Make your interaction with LinkedIn a scheduled task. We recommend daily,
but for some…weekly is as good as they can do. Put it on your calendar and
