Prof. R. C. Budhani has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. He is an experimental low temperature physicist with interests in the areas of superconductivity and magnetism in low dimensional systems. For the past several years, the focus of his research has been oxide-based doped Mott Insulators, which display a phenomenal variety of properties such as high temperature superconductivity, ferromagnetism, ferro-electricity, piezo-electricity, electrically or magnetically tunable electric and dielectric properties and so on. particularly those with rare earth cations and transition metal elements, phenomena
such as valence fluctuations, and interactions between the spin, charge and lattice
degrees of freedom g
ive rise to a number of fascinating effects. Still newer
phenomena such as spin polarized tunneling, pair breaking by spin polarized carriers,
interface magnetism, oscillatory interlayer exchange and oscillatory Josephson
coupling are seen when these mater
ials are synthesized in the form of epitaxial
multilayers and heterostructures. Prof. Budhani’s research is published in several
international journals of high repute. His contributions have been recognized through
Fellowships of the American Physical Soci
ety and the Indian Academy of Sciences.
He is also a recipient of the Materials Research Society of Indian Medal.
