Research and Practice


This unit embraces two complementary components. The first component focuses on
the develo
pment of students’ awareness
and understanding of key professional and

practice issues and the development of their professional skills in response to these
issues. The se

skills in the definition, planning and
execution of small, often work

based, research projects in a topical professional
area.
Together these two components equip students to reflect on and proactively develop
their futures as an information professional.

Literature & its Readers

This unit is about th
e pleasures and benefits people of all ages gain from reading
imaginative literature. It covers all aspects of the chain which links author to reader. It
includes how relevant organisations work together to support and promote reading for all
tastes. Re
cent developments, including the growth of reading groups and the use of the
Internet, are highlighted. A variety of methods including online learning are used in
delivering the unit. It is assessed by two pieces of coursework.


Applied Web Design and Ma

This unit focuses on the

prior knowledge and experience of HTML and CSS, this unit tests students with a
number of assignments, following good practices and standards in coding, acces

What days do I need to attend university?


We
endeavor

to timetable the taught units to run on two days in the week so that our
part time stud
ents can take

the course on one
-
day leave.
Typically
,

this has been on a
Monday and Wednesday with part time year one attending on Monday and year two on
Wednesday. You should note however that depending upon your choice of elective you
may be required to attend for a

morning or afternoon on another day in the week.


Can I study part time?


Yes, we offer the MA Library and Information Management and MSc Information
Management on a part time basis over three years. You will take 3 taught units in each
of the first
two years and spend the third year working on your dissertation.



What is mixed mode/ can I complete the part time course in two years?


Yes, if you can make suitable arrangements it is possible to work full time on your
dissertation on successful comple
tion of the taught units (studied in part time mode) and
submit your dissertation at the end of year two (30 September)


Do you offer a PG Diploma in Library and Information Management/ Information
Management


Yes, you can opt for the award of PG Diploma
on successful completion of the taught
units and not continue with the dissertation for the award of Masters. Both the Diploma
and Masters are accredited by CILIP as professional qualifications.


Should I study on the Library and Information Management/

Information Management or
Informatics route?


Our two Masters MA LIM and MSc IM are first professional/conversation courses which
equip our graduates with the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as an
information professional in the modern informat
ion environment.

Do I need to have work experience?


It is not necessary, but many of our students do have some work experience which is of
benefit when it comes to applying theory to practice and in gaining an appreciation of the
roles and
tasks of the information professional


How does the fieldwork element operate?


We help you arrange fieldwork and you liaise with your chosen organizations on how
you wish to complete the fieldwork. Typically students complete their fieldwork during
the S
pring term on one or two day a week basis, although

blocks of time can be
arranged
.

No exams.
And a mix of coursework with some group work.
